Interested in the Beauty Industry? Here Are Some Beauty-Related Jobs You Might Not Have Known About.
You’d be surprised by the diverse range of career paths in the beauty industry.
By Liam Sanchez
All of us at some point have wondered whether our passion should become our career, so that we get to do what we love, and make a living out of it. It’s a question that often seems to resurface over time. To which I also ask, can something as personal—and as creative—as beauty actually become a career?
I once thought that working in the beauty industry would either lead to becoming a makeup artist or a hair stylist, because these are the most visible jobs in the industry. But this idea no longer fits. Beauty goes beyond makeup chairs, or celebrity red carpet moments. The beauty industry also exists in other places, like the laboratory. It is a huge industry powered by artistry, science, innovation, and there is no shortage of space for talented people.
So if you’ve ever found yourself asking that same question, consider this your update. These are the unexpected roles that show there’s more than one way to turn a passion for beauty into a real job that is genuinely exciting.
Director of artistry or creative director for a beauty brand
This is the role for the beauty lover who doesn’t just follow trends, but sets them. A director of artistry or creative director is part educator, part creative visionary. They’re the face of the brand at events, the one training makeup artists, and the mind behind how products are used, presented, and understood. Pat McGrath is a prime example of a creative director shaping a brand’s identity, leading her eponymous label, Pat McGrath Labs.
It’s a role that thrives on collaboration, working across marketing, PR, events, while staying deeply rooted in creativity. Many of them start as makeup artists and climb their way up a brand’s corporate ladder, mastering not just technique but also leadership.
Cosmetic chemist
For women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, this is where beauty meets science. Cosmetic chemists are the formulators behind the products you love, the ones making sure your moisturizer hydrates, your foundation lasts, and your products are safe to use. Joyce de Lemos, a Filipina biochemist and cosmetic scientist, offers the perfect example of what this role is like. Before founding her indie brand Dieux Skin, she honed her expertise working with global beauty giants like L’Oréal and Cosmax.
It’s a deeply technical role, grounded in pharmaceutical science and chemistry, but the payoff? You get to create products that work best—from scratch. And whether it’s a role inside a major brand, or a research lab, this is where the magic finds its formula.
Product developer
Ever used something and thought, this could be better? Product developers are the reason those thoughts turn into actual products. They’re the big-picture thinkers of the beauty world—often tapped by brands to spot gaps in the market, imagine what’s missing, and oversee a product’s journey from concept to shelf by acting as a bridge between suppliers and the brand. They don’t engineer products from scratch, instead they often work with existing formulations from suppliers. While the role involves less technical or scientific expertise, a strong understanding of consumer behavior, and market trends is essential.
Beauty writer
And, just like us here at Allure Philippines, if you’ve ever found yourself enthusiastically sharing advice, or being that friend everyone asks for product recommendations, this might be your lane. Beauty writers live at the intersection of curiosity and taste, equal parts storyteller and cultural analyst. You can carve your own path by turning your point of view into a portfolio, apply for a magazine and be part of an editorial team.
Reimagining beauty
Beauty today is not confined to a single definition, and neither are the opportunities to be part of the industry. Those who are passionate, inquisitive, and creative are exactly the people this industry needs—people who are willing to reimagine how we can make this world a more beautiful place than we found it.
