Tailoring the ideal makeup routine calls for a lot more intention than we once thought. Over the last few years, many beauty trends like the “glass skin” and “clean girl” aesthetics have shifted the focus of makeup to emphasize one’s natural features and overall skin health instead.

But as purchases become more value-driven, and products continue to blur the lines between makeup and skin care through hybrid formulations, what exactly defines this year’s ideal look? For professional makeup artist Booya Mocorro, the answer first starts at the base, specifically with your skin type.

For this episode of Allure Beauty Breakdown, Mocorro walks us through the relationship between skin care and makeup using the Pond’s Serum Day Cream line, and how she uses its hydrating yet powdery finish to create the base for her take on 2018’s “soft glam” look.

In detailing her foundations for an ideal makeup base, Mocorro first explains the distinction between a curated skin care routine and products made specifically to prep the skin before applying makeup. “Skin care is your everyday routine to maintain your skin’s health, while skin prep is your pre-makeup routine that will help achieve a good makeup look that can either last the whole day or achieve the look that you actually want.”

Lately, Mocorro’s personal routine often revolves around products “that help the makeup glide smoothly on the skin,” later citing the Pond’s Serum Day Cream as a reflection of such needs.

Made with a blend of niacinamide, pro-gluta, and vitamin C, the ensemble of serum-based moisturizers was shared to hydrate, even out skin tones, and enhance the skin’s inner radiance, all while using its fine powder finish to create a nourishing yet soft makeup base across a variety of skin types. “Those ingredients help my products distribute evenly on the skin, so it’s such a user-friendly product. I also like how it’s categorized for oily, combination, dry to normal skin types, which makes it easier for anyone to incorporate it into their routines.”

From a professional’s perspective, the rise of makeup-skin care hybrids has certainly made a change in how Mocorro curates her everyday kit, yet she emphasizes that such products should not replace one’s skin care go-tos, if not their everyday routines entirely. “I personally like to use analogies, so think of it as finding the best notebook or sketchpad with a really smooth surface; they just help you draw or write better,” Mocorro shares. “That’s what I think defines a good skin prep routine. So it’s really nice to have even skin as it helps me apply products better, and inspire my creativity.”

With the Pond’s Serum Day Cream line, Mocorro expresses how much closer skin care and skin prep routines have become to elevate one’s everyday look without compromising on the ingredients that hydrate, nurture, and strengthen the skin. “‘Skin is more,’ which is a play on ‘less is more’; the better prepped your skin is, the better your artistry will become,” she adds.
