The way we understand skin care needs a slight correction. Over the last few years, many of us have worked meticulously to curate routines to make our skin glow brighter, look plumper, and feel smoother than it once was. And while buzzwords like skinimalism, slugging, and circadian skin care have set their own guiding principles that refine our everyday routines, the truth is, having good skin health was never meant to be the definitive solution for achieving quality skin.

For this year’s Skin Awareness Month, Galderma Philippines aimed to distinguish the two once and for all, shifting the conversation from the foundations of skin health to why patience might be the move your skin really needed. “We define the modern standard for quality skin as multi-dimensional,” says Galderma Philippines head of marketing Abe Mationg. “In other words, it is how skin looks, feels, and performs together, which is why we use a structured skin quality framework rather than a single ‘glow’ or ‘moisture’ claim.”

Since its founding in 1981, Galderma’s identity as a single-focused skin care and dermatological solutions brand was said to have shifted toward a more gradual, skin-quality-focused approach. For the brand, this change was claimed to reflect its goal in changing the narrative from standardized procedures to individualized journeys grounded in evidence rather than superficial market claims.

From establishing Cetaphil as a staple for gentle skin care to introducing advanced treatments such as trifarotene, Restylane, and Sculptra to the local medical community, the brand also explains how creating educational platforms has become a defining facet of its identity. “We believe that education empowers people to make better decisions for their skin, beyond simply following trends or looking for quick fixes,” says Mationg.

Over the years, Galderma shares that understanding what differentiates skin health from skin quality requires a bit of mental rewiring for those who still curate their routines based on immediacy:

Having hydrated skin is just the beginning

Many skin care trends on social media often depict hydrated skin as our main indicator of quality, if not overall health. Though Galderma acknowledges that hydration remains a necessary step in everyday routines, it only covers one dimension of the overall look. “Quality skin also includes texture and smoothness, elasticity and firmness, radiance or glow, and the appearance of fine lines,” Mationg adds. “Skin quality is not only what you see. Our materials break skin quality into visible and tactile dimensions, including topographical and mechanical aspects, not just color or glow.”

Skin quality is not a quick fix

While consumers think their skin care products can be quickly replaced to meet their needs, Galderma believes this may affect more than just their skin, as the chase for immediate, visible changes can also negatively impact their confidence over time. “Galderma’s current approach explicitly reflects a broader market shift from episodic fixes to long-term journeys, where results and confidence are built over time with proof, not just claims.”

There’s no such thing as a definitive routine

It goes without saying that no skin care routine is just as universal as it is meant to last. Galderma doubles down on this, elaborating how factors such as age, lifestyle, and other internal and external concerns require more personalized solutions to prevent and remedy such inevitable changes over time. The brand also believes that curating routines with products claimed to work on various skin types can leave consumers complacent about such underlying concerns, leading them to buy more than what they actually need.

Addressing these misconceptions served as the main topic for this year’s Skin Awareness Month, where Galderma hosted an intimate panel discussion with Philippine board-certified dermatologists and a cosmetic surgeon to break down the journey to achieving healthy and quality skin. Whether it’s through regenerative treatments to enhance skin quality or acne-focused solutions, the event also showcased how the brand’s Cetaphil line works to assist in each step of the journey through its gentle yet nourishing formulation of glycerin, niacinamide, and panthenol.

“Through this broader approach, we aim to help consumers understand that achieving optimal skin health is not about finding a single product or solution, but about building a personalized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs,” Mationg adds.

Galderma claims that Skin Awareness Month is more than just an annual celebration of its leading lineup of services and products. For the brand, these moments serve as a starting point for those looking to adopt a more personalized shift in their skin care journey. “Listen to your skin,” she adds.

“The best skin quality is achieved through the right combination of treatments, and by encouraging a more personalized and holistic approach, we want to empower consumers to make informed decisions that work with their skin, rather than what is popular online.”
