You’d think growing up around actors and known personalities would come with a built-in beauty routine.

Not really.

Filipino fencer Juliana Gomez may have grown up with actor parents and a front-row seat to fashion and beauty, but she didn’t have a makeup routine until a year and a half ago. The lesson she took from her parents, “less is more,” still shapes a routine that’s short, natural, and easy to take off—something that fits her personality and her daily life.

In this Allure Philippines exclusive, Gomez shares how she nailed her daily beauty look, the lessons her parents taught her, and the products that fit into her makeup routine.

What’s your earliest memory of thinking about your own style?

My mom would always let me pick out my own clothes when we’d have the chance to go shopping, or when I’d build my outfits before school. I was always given the freedom to wear whatever I wanted, and it was usually a T-shirt and some kind of tutu.

What about your makeup style?

My makeup style came a little later. By a little later, I mean maybe just a year and a half ago. I discovered what really worked for me, and I’ve recently gotten comfortable with doing my own makeup, because I just found my routine.

Was there a specific age when you started choosing your own look instead of what felt “expected”?

Oh yeah. I’d say when I was in preschool, I was already very interested in fashion, and I was already choosing my own outfits. I was already telling my mom what I preferred [wearing].

What’s one beauty or skin care lesson you’ve carried with you from your parents?

Less is more, from my mom and my dad. Never touch your face. I remember I wanted braces so badly because I wanted straight teeth, but they just kept telling me, “You don’t need to fix your teeth; just smile with a little imperfection. It adds more character.”

How would you describe the evolution of your look from your teenage years to who you are today?

I wouldn’t say it’s evolved much. I’m 26 now, so I’m at the age where I can wear more things. I would say that things that people might think are too mature for a 16-year-old, I can probably get away with now, but other than that, my style hasn’t really changed much.

I still like to wear sneakers, I still love my denims, and I’m a big fan of outerwear, so those things have stuck with me.

What is the biggest beauty mistake or trend you tried in the past that you’d never do again?

I wouldn’t call it a mistake because if I didn’t go through those phases, then I might have learned them at a later time, and it would have been much worse. But maybe wearing too much makeup back in high school.

I was experimenting back in 2016 when that was the trend. Everyone had the eyeshadow palettes, the heavy contour, and the super-filled eyebrows. I was also exploring my makeup style at that time. I feel like I wore a little bit too much, but yeah. We’re definitely past that now.

Is there a specific eye makeup you don’t want to do?

I’m actually open to playing with color; I just feel like I can’t do it myself. I only know how to do casual makeup on myself. I don’t know how to do a full glam yet, but if I had to, I wouldn’t mind.

Do you prefer natural or glam?

I prefer natural makeup just because it’s easier to remove, but I don’t mind full glam.

What’s your skin care routine?

Well, my skin is pretty dry, so I like to prep very well. I go for moisturizer, primer, and I love eye patches.

What’s your eye patch reco?

I do. I like the Cosrx Peptide Collagen Eye Patches from TikTok, and if readily available for purchase, I also really like the Rhode Peptide Eye Prep Patches.

How has your definition of “beauty” evolved over the last few years?

I wouldn’t say it’s evolved much. I’ve always been very steady in my beauty beliefs when it comes to myself.

What are the non-negotiables inside your everyday beauty pouch?

Some sort of lip balm. I always need that. I feel more put together when I have my lip balm, and then my blush. I love the Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Cheek & Lip Tint because it’s really easy to apply, and oil-blotting sheets.

Specific brand for your lip balm?

I like the Lucas Pawpaw Ointment. I love that. You can buy them in packs of five from S&R, and it’s the best.

If you could only keep one beauty product in your bag at all times, what would it be?

Lip balm. Lip balm for sure.

What’s a beauty or style tip you wish you had learned much earlier?

Well, I wish I learned about bronzer a little bit earlier. I feel like when I added that to my very short makeup routine, it brought my face together a little bit more whenever I put makeup on.

Do you have a favorite brand for your bronzer?

I like the one from Gucci Westman [Westman Atelier].

What specific shade?

I honestly just picked whatever was brown enough for me.
